Become a Red Cross Volunteer

Voluntary service is a fundamental principle and a valuable part of the American Red Cross mission. The Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross has over 1,000 dedicated people who volunteer their time and energy to help us serve our community.  We would love to have you join our team of committed volunteers.

How do you know if you are ready to volunteer?

We suggest that you do a Self-Assessment. This will help you decide if the American Red Cross is a good fit for you. After reviewing the self-assessment, be sure to review our  Volunteer Opportunities to see if there is a good match for you.

Whether you want to volunteer on a day to day basis or are interested in deploying nationally, this is where to get started!  Once you have reviewed the self-assessment and our volunteer opportunities, complete the steps below and submit all forms to volunteer@arizonaredcross.org.

Application Process

  1. Complete an Volunteer Application.

  2. Complete the New Volunteer Orientation online class. Click here to access the New Volunteer Orientation Class

  3. Apply to the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR). All volunteers are required to complete a DSHR application although volunteers only deploy if they choose to do so. You must meet DSHR criteria to deploy to state and national disasters. Click here to download Disaster Application Form

  4. Review the Volunteer Handbook . This application asks you to certify that you've read and understand the handbook.
Click here to review the Volunteer Handbook

Submit your applications (regular and/or DSHR) by fax (602-336-6485) or email (volunteer@arizonaredcross.org). Once your applications are received, you will be contacted to register for an in-person Orientation in your area. Volunteer classes are FREE of charge.
  5. We believe that in order to maintain the trust of the American people and provide them with the best quality service, all Red Cross volunteers must undergo and clear background checks that include a verification of the social security number and a search of the National Criminal File

  • The background check is a tool increasingly used by profit and not-for-profit organizations nation-wide. The Non Profit Risk Management Center recommends background screening for all businesses.
  • Background checks are used solely for the purpose of evaluating an individual’s suitability for employment or volunteer service with the Red Cross. Access to the information gather is limited to only those with a need to know and remains on the vendor’s secure website.
  • The required Red Cross background check includes a verified social security number and a clear criminal history for the past 7 years (in most states) from the date of disposition, release from jail or prison, or release from probation or parole, whichever occurs latest.
All volunteers will be provided the information needed to process a background check through the volunteer orientation process.  If you have any concerns about this, please discuss them with the Volunteer Resources department before participating in a volunteer orientation.

If you would like to get started on your Red Cross training, complete the Introduction To Disaster online class. Click here to access the Introduction To Disaster class. To receive credit for this class, please click here to complete the survey.
